KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Six individuals are accused in a federal indictment of conspiring to make use of a drone to fly contraband similar to cell telephones and marijuana into the U.S. Penitentiary in Leavenworth.
The indictment was unsealed Wednesday after all of the suspects have been arrested, in accordance with courtroom data within the U.S. District of Kansas.
Two prisoners, Dale Gaver III and Melvin Edwards, allegedly organized with 4 folks exterior the jail to ship objects requested by different inmates into the jail yard between August 2020 and Could 2021, The Wichita Eagle reported.
The objects included cell telephones, the artificial drug Ok-2, marijuana and tobacco merchandise.
Transactions over the cash cellphone software CashApp recorded unlawful funds made as a part of the smuggling operation, in accordance with the federal government.
The defendants are Dale Gaver III, 35; Dale Gaver II, 54; Joshua Hamilton, 37; and Rex Hill 33, all initially of Omaha, Nebraska; and Melvin Edwards, 44; and Tamarae Hollman, 36, of Riverside, California.
They've all been charged with conspiracy to offer and possess contraband in jail.
The courtroom paperwork don't identify attorneys for the defendants.
