Iranian singer wins Grammy while facing prison time for protest anthem

Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour, 25, received a Grammy in one of the best tune for social change class, launched by first girl Jill Biden on the award ceremony on Monday.

“A tune can unite, encourage and finally change the world,” Biden mentioned. Hajipour’s tune, “Baraye,” she added, was “a strong and poetic name for freedom and girls’s rights.”

Hajipour first launched the tune in October 2022 on Instagram, which Iranian officers rapidly took down, reported The Related Press. The singer was arrested shortly after the tune was launched, was let loose on bail and is now awaiting trial. He faces expenses of “propaganda in opposition to the regime” and “instigating the violence,” which may end in as much as six years of jail.

After his arrest, the singer mentioned in a video on Instagram, “I wrote this tune in solidarity with the people who find themselves essential of the state of affairs like a lot of our artists who reacted,” per The New York Instances.

The tune referred to as “Baraye,” which interprets to “For,” references a slogan used within the protests, “For ladies, life, freedom,” and incorporates tweets from Iranians that confirmed the ache they're feeling within the lyrics, per AP.

“For embarrassment as a result of being penniless; / For craving for an atypical life; / For the kid laborer and his goals; / For this dictatorial financial system; / For this polluted air; / For this pressured paradise; / For jailed intellectuals; / For all of the empty slogans,” are simply among the lyrics, per The New York Instances.
