Writer Salman Rushdie has reportedly misplaced sight in a single eye and using one hand as he recovers from a knife assault at a lecture in New York in August of this 12 months.

In an interview with El Pais, Rushdie’s literary agent, Andrew Wylie, described the accidents Rushdie sustained after a person attacked him with a knife earlier than his lecture at Chautauqua Establishment on August 2022.

“(His wounds) have been profound, however he’s (additionally) misplaced the sight of 1 eye... He had three critical wounds in his neck,” Wylie acknowledged. “One hand is incapacitated as a result of the nerves in his arm have been reduce. Wylie didn't reveal Rushdie’s present location or if he was nonetheless hospitalized.

Rushdie, 75, is an award-winning novelist whose 1988 novel, “The Satanic Verses,” was so controversial he had to enter hiding.

Why was Salman Rushdie attacked?

Following the publication of the novel, Iranian chief Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1989 calling for Rushdie to be killed.

Though Iran now not formally helps fatwa towards Rushdie, the writer was attacked in August, 2022 and Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old man, is now in custody. He has pled not responsible to tried homicide and assault, The Related Press reported.
