MALIBU — Eileen Ryan, an actor who appeared on TV, in movies and on Broadway and the matriarch of the steeped-in-the-arts Penn household, has died. She was 94.
Ryan, who was the mom of actors Sean Penn and Christopher Penn and musician Michael Penn, died at her residence in Malibu on Sunday, in accordance with household spokesperson Mara Buxbaum. Ryan would have turned 95 subsequent Sunday.
“We misplaced mother yesterday,” Michael Penn tweeted with a damaged coronary heart emoji.
She had two roles on Broadway within the Fifties — each short-lived — in “Sing Until Tomorrow” in 1953 and “Comes a Day” in 1958.
In 1957, Ryan was at rehearsals for “Iceman Cometh” when she met Leo Penn, who had taken over for Jason Robards on the Circle within the Sq. manufacturing. They moved in collectively inside every week of assembly and married a number of months later. Leo Penn died in 1998.
