Why is this college commissioner with strong Utah ties stepping down?

Craig Thompson, who has been the Mountain West Convention’s commissioner because the league’s formation in 1999, is stepping down after almost 24 years on the helm.

The MWC introduced the transfer will take impact Dec. 31, 2022.

Thompson indicated the timing for his retirement is tied partly to the latest choice to develop the Faculty Soccer Playoff from 4 to 12 groups.

“My one remaining precedence was growth of the Faculty Soccer Playoff and viable entry for the Mountain West,” Thompson mentioned in an announcement. “I take appreciable satisfaction in my dedicated engagement to this effort over the previous 212 a long time and stay up for the finalization of these particulars within the coming months.  

“With CFP growth achieved and having invested nearly a 3rd of my life within the Mountain West, the time is now proper for me to conclude my tenure and permit the Convention to proceed its momentum below new management.”

Three Utah Division I faculties — BYU, Utah and Utah State — have been a member of the Mountain West throughout Thompson’s tenure. 

BYU and Utah had been constitution members of the league, which started play in 1999, whereas Utah State joined the convention starting in 2013.
