EUGENE, Oregon — College of Oregon officers are apologizing for “despicable chants” directed at BYU followers and their faith within the second half of the Geese’ 41-20 win over the Cougars Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

The chants emanated from not less than three Oregon followers and drew a rebuke on Twitter from Utah Gov. Spencer Cox on Saturday evening after video of the followers chanting the spiritual slur surfaced on Twitter.

“The college apologizes for the despicable chants made by some College of Oregon followers at right this moment’s soccer sport with Brigham Younger College. There isn't a place for hate, bias or bigotry on the College of Oregon. These actions are merely unacceptable. We'll examine, and we name on our college students and campus group to refuse to simply accept or tolerate any such conduct,” mentioned Kris Winter, interim Vice President for the Division of Pupil Life on the College of Oregon, in an emailed message to the Deseret Information.

The chants focused members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who're generally known as Mormons, and have been just like what USC followers chanted at BYU final November.

“Spiritual bigotry alive and celebrated in Oregon,” Cox mentioned in a tweet Saturday.

Saturday’s sport kicked off at 1:30 p.m. MDT and was televised nationally by Fox. It was not clear whether or not the chants have been audible on the tv broadcast.

Oregon has a number of gamers with ties to Utah or who're members of the Church, together with linebacker Noah Sewell, a standout at Orem Excessive close to BYU earlier than transferring on to play for the Geese.

Final November, after BYU defeated Southern California 35-31 on the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, USC’s athletic division issued a public apology the next day through Twitter for “an offensive chant” it says got here from its scholar cheering part.

The chants have been clearly heard a number of instances that evening on ESPN’s nationwide broadcast of the sport.
