“Xanadu” skates again into the Bay Space for a multi-week engagement in downtown San Jose.
The musical hit, which performed for 11 weeks in 2011 on the previous Retro Dome in San Jose, is being introduced by San Jose Playhouse and relies on the splendidly campy and delightfully entertaining film from 1980.
The Robert Greenwald-film starred the wonderful Olivia Newton-John — who died earlier this month on the age of 73 — because the roller-skating muse Kira, a daughter of Zeus who comes down from Olympus to frolic with and encourage struggling artist Sonny (performed by Michael Beck).
The movie includes a terrific soundtrack, highlighted by the inspiring “Magic” — which could simply be the most effective music Newton-John ever recorded — in addition to the Electrical Gentle Orchestra hits “All Over the World,” “I’m Alive” and “Xanadu.”
After all, all of these numbers are additionally featured within the upcoming stage manufacturing, which is a part of “Up On The Roof” program — the place performances are held on the roof of the 2nd Avenue and San Carlos Storage above 3Below Theaters.
The San Jose Playhouse manufacturing stars Annie Hunt as Kira, Jason Kimmel as Sonny and Jim Ambler as Danny (initially performed by Gene Kelly in his last movie function).
