WEST OAKLAND — Firefighters managed a hearth at a homeless encampment beneath a freeway overpass Monday afternoon, after the blaze despatched thick clouds of black smoke into the air.
The hearth, close to thirty fourth and Wooden streets, was reported round 1:40 p.m. Emeryville firefighters noticed smoke coming within the space, despatched an engine there, and crews started spraying down the blaze with an engine hose.
