Omicron Fear: Restrictions Needed or Overkill? I India Development Debate

The Central government announced today that the resumption of scheduled international flights will be postponed amid growing fears of the Omicron variant. The DGCA has said that it is monitoring the situation and has not ruled out the possibility of resumption of regular flights if the covid situation improves. India currently has bubble arrangements with 31 countries which will continue. Fears of the Omicron variant have put a dampener on the resurgence of the recovering travel and hospitality industry, with top leaders of India Inc expressing concern over the DGCA's move and stating that a knee-jerk reaction could backfire. Are the stringent travel restrictions a necessary safety measure or are they overkill?
