Stubble burning decriminalized; Has government surrendered to farmers? | The Newshour Debate
In this episode of The Newshour special edition, with Pranesh Kumar Roy, we will discuss the issue of stubble burning which causes the downgrade in air quality. People in northern India are finding it difficult to breathe due to increasing air pollution. Yet the government doesn't care as stubble burning has been decriminalized as per the demands of the farmers association. Agricultural minister Narendra Singh Tomar informs that stubble burning has now been decriminalized accepting yet another demand of the farmers. "We could've addressed this problem by giving incentives to farmers for not burning stubble or creating a mechanism to collect stubble," says Debi Goenka, environmentalist.
