Srinagar: Bodies of Mohammad Altaf Bhat and Mudasir Gul, killed in Hyderpora encounter were, on Thursday, exhumed. They will be handed over to their families, officials said, news agencies quoted. The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered an inquiry by Srinagar ADM into the Hyderpora encounter.
"Authorities on Thursday exhumed bodies of Mohammad Altaf Bhat and Mudasir Gul, two civilians killed in the Hyderpora encounter, for handing them over to their families," officials were quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
According to reports, this is the first time that bodies buried under a police watch have been exhumed after the COVID-19 pandemic. The bodies were taken to Srinagar from Handwara where they were originally buried. A massive war of words had erupted over the deaths of the two in an encounter in Hyderpora.
National Conference leader and former chief minister Omar Abdullah had demanded that the bodies of the two be returned to their families. "Jammu and Kashmir police has also accepted that the civilians were killed in cross-firing. I just want the bodies of civilians to be returned," he had said.
